Your Host

Your host, Don Karvelis, is a retired history professor and Instructional Dean from Cerritos College in Norwalk, California. He taught a U.S. history survey course as well as early and modern Western Civilization.

Prior to that, he earned four academic degrees, a B.Th. in theology and education from Life Pacific College, and a B.A. and M.A in modern European history, as well as an Ed.D. in Higher Education/Administration from UCLA.

For most of his life, Don has loved to travel. While teaching, he spent several summers with his students in the Boston area, as well as overseas in Austria, Hungary, Turkey, Scotland, and Kenya. He also organized tours and traveled with groups of friends to Europe and the Caribbean.

Don was born in Victoria, B.C., Canada, living there through his first two years of college. He came to the United States to continue his college education, and ended up staying. Although he has family living in Canada, he became a U.S. citizen many years ago. He has owned a Green-Wing Macaw for 35 years. She came from the jungles of Bolivia when importing these birds was legal, and is named after the famous lead character in a popular radio and TV show of the 40s and 50s. Like the Mounties, Sergeant Preston wears a bright red “coat.”

In addition to hosting the Las Fuentes Inn and Gardens, Don operates two home-based businesses. He is a Wellness/Nutrition Consultant with Unicity International at www.myunicity.net/inthepink, and owns a YTB travel/shopping web-site called www.KarvelisTravel.com. He works one or two days per week as an “Interpreter” for the Agua Caliente Cultural Museum in the Village Green in downtown Palm Springs. There, various exhibits and events present the culture and history of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.

He is a member of the Desert Horticultural Society of the Coachella Valley, and a strong advocate of desert landscaping.

Don is a committed Christian, actively involved in Our Savior’s Community Church, Palm Springs.

Obviously, Don keeps busy, but always takes time to visit with and assist his guests. He looks forward to meeting you soon!
